US Open: After receiving a wild card to compete in the doubles at Flushing Meadows, Serena Williams and her sister Venus will make an emotional entrance at the US Open.
Serena’s storied career is likely to finish at the US Open, and the wild card provides her two chances to win.
The sisters will compete in doubles in New York, where they won the championship together in 1999 and 2009, for the seventh time in their careers.
The Williams sisters have a fantastic record, having won all 14 Grand Slam doubles finals they have competed in. However, their most recent final was at Wimbledon in 2016, and they haven’t participated in a major tournament together since reaching the round of 16 at the French Open four years ago.
Serena has stated that she is “growing away from tennis,” therefore this is likely to be their final appearance together. They last competed in doubles at the US Open in 2014.
Venus is also scheduled to compete in the singles tournament, but the 23-time Grand Slam singles champion’s farewell will rule the competition for as long as she is in it.
Serena, who is now ranked 608th in the world, will play Danka Kovinic of Montenegro in the opening round, while Venus Williams, a seven-time Grand Slam champion, will take on Alison Van Uytvanck of Belgium.
Osaka, a two-time singles champion, acknowledges her lack of confidence
The women’s draw features 15 active or former Grand Slam champions, including two-time US Open champion Naomi Osaka.
The 24-year-old has had a challenging year. After the US Open in 2017, she did not compete as she prioritised her mental health, and this season, she has had form and fitness issues.
She was unable to compete at Wimbledon due to a problematic Achilles injury, and two weeks earlier in Toronto, she had to forfeit her match due to a back ailment.
Now ranked down at 44, Osaka is unseeded and will take on Australian Open finalist Danielle Collins in the first round on Tuesday.
She told a press conference in New York: “I feel like I would have lied a day ago or so and said that I was really relaxed. But actually, when I practised today, I felt very anxious. I think it’s because I really want to do well because I feel I haven’t been doing well lately.
