Basketball News: Stephen Curry’s reputation is secure as the only player in NBA history to be unanimously named MVP – but the best shooter of all time made sure that his record book now includes the All-Star Game as well.
Curry shattered nearly every All-Star record in NBA history, finishing with 16 three-pointers and a total of 50 points.
In fact, the only record he didn’t break was Anthony Davis’ 52-point performance in an All-Star Game in 2017. Curry missed his final six attempts from the floor after setting new records for the most three-pointers in an All-Star quarter (6), half (8), and game (15), as well as passing James Harden for first place on the midseason classic’s overall made threes chart (39) to go to the top.
Stephen Curry, who was born in Akron, Ohio, put on a show that will be remembered for a long time. His second quarter, in particular, was noteworthy, including a vintage onslaught of six downtown makes that helped him set single-quarter and half records.
That was just a warm-up for him, as he went on to score a half-century of points to lead Team LeBron to victory over Team Durant, 163-160, in a game played to a target score.
Curry’s performance peaked in the third quarter when the league’s all-time three-pointer maker drained a mind-boggling five three-pointers in 128 seconds. Before and after each shot, the eight-time All-Star had the Cleveland crowd humming.
Curry’s 13th three-pointer set an All-Star Game record, and his 15th set a regular-season record, all before the third quarter was done.
Curry’s performance was as much about charity as it was about showbiz. According to ESPN’s Nick DePaula, the Ohio native planned to donate $1,000 for every point he scored, $3,000 for every three he made, and $10,000 if he was named All-Star MVP, all to the Cleveland Metro School District.
Curry was honoured as a part of the NBA 75th Anniversary Team at halftime of Sunday’s All-Star Game, after passing Ray Allen for first place on the all-time made threes list earlier this season.
