WBO World Cruiserweight Title: David Light is accustomed to being dismissed. But, this does not diminish the cruiserweight contender’s confidence in his ability to unseat WBO world champion Lawrence Okolie.
This Saturday at the AO Arena in Manchester, the New Zealander will square off against Okolie.
Light is unbeaten, but Okolie is also, and the British boxer is a tall, powerful puncher who is now the champion.
“When I meet people, I have to explain and really persuade them that I’m a professional fighter because they simply don’t believe it,” Light chuckled.
“People frequently dismiss me. I’ve recently grown to truly like proving folks wrong.”
Light is a naturally laid-back person. Of his eight siblings, he is the youngest.
He said, “I grew up with much older brothers. I had an elder brother who was nine years my senior.”
“They enjoyed keeping us under control. I’ve never been good at getting angry, talking tough, or acting in that manner.
“It also explains why I’ve become a little bit more resilient and taken the path I have.”

The last time he boxed, he defeated American Brandon Glanton in Florida against all odds.
“The same thing happened. I was the underdog going in,” he claimed. “I truly was the underdog.”
“When the WBO judges viewed it how I did and awarded me the victory, they deserve real praise. I was ecstatic about that.”
Light has been after Okolie for a while now despite his relative obscurity in the UK.
Light continued, “We’ve been watching Okolie for a while. We knew this was going to happen, so we’ve been making provisions for it for a while.”
“I’ve known this is how things will turn out.”
Although the champion has amazing qualities, Light advises: “He has weaknesses that can also be used against him.
“He definitely has a big right hand, is tall, and makes good use of his height. In that way, he can avoid danger.”
But he cautions Okolie not to dismiss him as a rival. “He is not at all underestimating me, in my opinion. He isn’t naive, in my opinion,” said Light.
