Heavyweight Fight: Australian heavyweight Demsey McKean insists he can “retire” British boxer Anthony Joshua and said there had been talks about him becoming his next opponent.
After suffering back-to-back losses against Oleksandr Usyk, it has been more than two years since Joshua last claimed victory. According to reports, the 33-year-old plans to return to the ring shortly in an effort to restart his career.
The Australian southpaw McKean, who has a record of 22-0 with 14 knockouts, is prepared to be that person.
He said to Sky Sports, “We are one of the frontrunners for a potential opponent for Anthony Joshua.
“I am quite confident that I can be (the one to retire Joshua). But don’t misunderstand me—AJ still has bouts left. Even if he loses to a top-10 heavyweight like me, it shouldn’t be the end of the story.
“Probably not enough credit is given to him for what he has done for the heavyweight division. He has attracted a lot of attention and financial support to the heavyweight class.
“He’s definitely the biggest name in boxing, and I’m not the only one who wants to see him succeed. You should list it on your CV. People will continue to pay to watch fights as long as they are still being manufactured. But with three straight defeats, is he really required to continue this when his position is already secure?
“I know that he still doubts himself a lot and that he probably still has his reservations. Who wouldn’t, though, if they were at the top, in the spotlight, and subject to constant criticism? There are many reasons, but I am confident that I have the skills to do so (retire him).
McKean thinks the time is right for him to face a well-known opponent.
“If the fight gets through, I feel confident,” he declared. He doesn’t want to face a southpaw, which is the only reason I have any doubts.
“It would be unfortunate. I’ve also been on the verge of several major conflicts. I’ve been on the verge of facing Dillian Whyte as well. The fact that some of the world’s top boxers pick and choose who they fight makes me sad. In the past, we would not have had this.
“Even Tyson Fury a few years back, when his fight with Deontay Wilder was postponed and he was searching for a last-minute replacement. It again came down to not wanting to engage in combat with a southpaw.
“All these supposedly champion boxers don’t want to fight a southpaw because the world has gone insane. I Hope Joshua picks himself up and fights this time.
“I’ve been sparring with him for years, and I’ve also spent two nights in his camp. By the number of rounds, I offer these individuals, he can tell that the fight will be difficult.
“There are not many people that move as he does; he is a fluid operator. Both advantages and disadvantages come with his size.”
