Boxing Live: Negotiations for Anthony Joshua’s rematch with Dillian Whyte have resumed after Joshua’s management agreed to eliminate their late sought rematch clause.
A crucial obstacle has been cleared for the second bout, which will take place on August 12 at The O2.
The Brixton man recently detailed how a late request for a one-way rematch provision in Joshua’s favour hampered bout negotiations after Whyte agreed to their original demands.
Joshua has previously been connected to a potential Deontay Wilder bout, which is expected to take place later this year in the Middle East.
If he beats Joshua, Whyte will strive for a similar fight in the future. So the rematch clause problem may have been a huge stumbling point.
Whyte and Joshua have a long history of rivalry. He defeated AJ as an amateur before going on to win an Olympic gold medal in London in 2012.
They competed in a dramatic 2015 British heavyweight title fight, which Joshua won by seventh-round knockout.
Joshua eventually became the world’s undisputed champion. After losing two consecutive fights against Oleksandr Usyk, he bounced back with a victory over Jermaine Franklin in April.
After losing the WBC championship battle to Tyson Fury at Wembley Stadium in 2022, Whyte rebuilt with a points victory over Franklin.
“I’ve been up for fighting Joshua since the day I lost to him in 2015,” Whyte previously told Sky Sports.
“The score is now 1-1. He’s already won one. I beat him in the amateurs, then he beat me in the professionals, so I’m looking to settle the score.”
“I would love nothing more than to have a chance to avenge my defeat,” he continued.
“I’m just going to war. I want to go to war because I believe that’s the best way to battle him, to put pressure on him, to back him up, and to put him on the back foot as soon as possible, and I’m powerful enough and large enough to accomplish it.
“I obviously carry enough power to back him up and knock him out.”
