BBBofC: Due to their actions at the final press conference before their fight in January, Liam Smith and Chris Eubank Jr. were summoned to appear before the British Boxing Board of Control; as a result, both have been fined. Liam Smith has expressed regret for his homophobic comments.
Liam Smith and Chris Eubank Jr. were each fined by the British Boxing Board of Control (BBBofC) for their actions during a press conference prior to their fight in January.
Two days before their main event match at the Manchester Arena, on January 19, Smith made homophobic comments about Eubank Jr. Eubank also seemed to provoke Smith with remarks regarding the Liverpudlian’s personal life and his class.
Both boxers were summoned to a hearing by the BBBofC, who later fined them both for their behaviour.
The British Boxing Board of Control’s Stewards met on Wednesday, April 12, 2023, and discussed comments made by Liam Smith and Chris Eubank Jr. at the press conference from the previous day, the 19th of January 2023, according to a release.
“Mr Smith did not show up and was not represented by counsel. When Mr Eubank Jr. did not show up, he was in court.
“After careful review of all the information presented to them, the Stewards determined that both boxers’ allegations of wrongdoing were validated.
“Both Mr Smith and Mr Eubank Jr. received fines, with payment due in twenty-eight days.”
Following the offensive press conference, both fighters expressed regret.
This week, Smith has made it known that he “regrets every bit of the fight week.”
The comments said at the press conference, according to Smith, “should never have been stated, in any aspect of life, let alone at a press conference for boxing.
“There will be certain people I’ll never be able to win back, and I’m still dealing with the fallout from that now.
“I really apologise to everyone I offended,” I stated after the press conference, and I truly regret how it went. What was said should never have been said.”
