Boxing Fight: Savannah Marshall will begin her quest for atonement against Franchon Crews-Dezurn at the AO Arena in Manchester on June 17, Liam Smith vs. Chris Eubank Jr.
When the Hartlepool star moves up to super-middleweight to compete against Crews-Dezurn for her WBO, WBA, WBC, and IBF championships, she gets an immediate crack at another undisputed title. Last year, Marshall lost her rematch with Claressa Shields.
She is motivated to take advantage of her second chance to win the sport’s highest prize after learning from her experience with Shields.
“For me, looking back [at the Shields fight], I see just how much I’ve grown,” Marshall said in a statement to Sky Sports. The build-up was extremely intense with all the back-and-forth movement.
She is confident in her ability to handle a situation like that as well as the particular pressure of competitiveness.
Marshall is aware that she cannot afford to make a mistake if she hopes to succeed at that level. The strategy must be precise.
She said, “For me, it was a huge learning curve of look, the tactics have to be right, the tactics have to be right. Even the best of us make mistakes, the saying goes.”
She did add, “That was the best Claressa we’ve ever seen.” I knew it would be a tough fight, without underestimating her achievements, but she proved to be far more resilient than I had imagined.
“She is entitled to refer to herself as the best in the world.”
Marshall is confident that her prior experience will help her get past Crews-Dezurn.
Marshall remarked, “I know what I’m bringing myself in for and I know what she does. She’s rough, tough, and pretty dirty, and I believe she makes use of that to her advantage.”
“I think she struggles with the fundamentals. But she has mastered this, and she has made it work for her. This is what works in her favour.
“I want to win the global title once more. That was the intention, and it still is. I didn’t get another chance with Claressa, so this is the best I can do.
