Boxing Live: Chris Eubank Jr. has made the extraordinary allegation that his fight with Liam Smith in January should have gone to round four rather than being stopped.
At a press conference on Tuesday to announce their rematch on Saturday, June 17, Smith and Eubank Jr faced up for the first time.
Eubank and Liam Smith will fight once more at the Manchester Arena in June after Smith stopped Eubank in a brutal contest in January.
Unusual for Eubank Jr., he argued that Smith’s first fight should have been extended.
Eubank Jr. stated, “The thing I regret is not being given the chance to get through it.”
“I wanted to keep talking. I felt like I was cheated out of the opportunity to see if I could conquer that obstacle. We agree to this when we sign up. We agree to be injured. We consent to the prospect of being disciplined.
“Great, that’s what I deserve. If a beating was what I was prepared to take if the conflict had continued longer. I’d have agreed to that. That would have been fun for me.”
He said, “In my judgement, the referee stopped me, not him. We were both essentially robbed there.
“I know my limits and when to stop as a seasoned veteran of the sport. I was buzzing, but I could see what was going on.”
It’s a claim that Smith completely rejected. “Any other fighter gets stopped after that first knockdown,” declared Smith, who knocked Eubank Jr. down twice before the conclusion.
“Everything that he believed couldn’t happen to him and that Chris takes great satisfaction in not happening happened to him all in one night.
“I did it to him, too.
Smith continued, “I knew I was a better fighter than Chris. Now that I weigh 160 pounds, I am aware that I am capable of harming him. Now, I feel quite confident.
“He had to accept this rematch to save face if he wanted to advance in his career.”
“He needs to conquer a lot of demons.”
