Boxing Fight: With a thrilling second-round knockout victory over Rylan Charlton, Adam Azim easily handled the most difficult test of his career to date.
Azim’s opponent, Charlton, was expected to be a significant step up for him, but at Alexandra Palace, the 20-year-old knocked down his tough opponent twice in the first round before mercilessly ending the fight early in the second.
Azim now has a record of 7-0 in his young professional career, with all but his first fight ending within the distance.
Coach Shane McGuigan reiterated his opinion that Azim is the most talented boxer he has ever trained after the fight, which will only increase the anticipation for the super-lightweight prospect.
Certainly, a significant one said Azim to Sky Sports.
“I was confident that I had him in the opening round. Shane instructed me to be cool and wait for the shot.
I was obviously very excited in the first round, but Shane advised me to relax, and I succeeded.
Azim fired a warning shot less than 30 seconds later, throwing Charlton off balance with a right hand.
Following Charlton’s attempts to gain the upper hand, he dodged them before landing a couple of perfectly timed left hands to put the Norfolk fighter on the defensive.
By crouching down in an attempt to survive, Charlton made himself vulnerable to several clubbing right hands to the top of his head that, although they didn’t land cleanly, still did plenty of damage.
Finally, Azim connected with a straight right hook that knocked Charlton to the ground. When he stood up with less than ten seconds left in the round, Azim was able to knock him down once more with a vicious left hand, and the fight only continued because the bell rang.
The respite, however, was only momentary, as Azim brutally ended the match 40 seconds into the second round with a right hand over the top.
After performing his signature backflip celebration, the 20-year-old hugged his mother through the ropes before dedicating the win to her.
“I’m on it all the time,” Azim said.
“Shane told me to unwind the entire time as I was entering. I just wanted to enter the ring and fight because I was so furious!”
What action should Azim take next?
Amir Khan, a retired superstar, sees Adam Azim following in his footsteps.
He does, however, advise against hurrying the promising youngster.
Khan, a world champion at the age of 22, advised against moving him too quickly since you might lose to someone with more experience.
“There are times when experience is more important than raw strength and speed.
Therefore, if he is managed properly, I believe you still need to keep him moving steadily and step by step, and I’m confident he will be one of the youngest world champions.
