Boxing Match: Canelo Alvarez gave Gennady Golovkin’s trilogy a fitting conclusion.
At the T Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, he won a resounding unanimous decision to defend his undisputed super-middleweight title.
Alvarez of Mexico and Golovkin of Kazakhstan have a troubled past together. In 2017 and 2018, they had two outstanding middleweight title matches.
But the outcome of their first fight was a bloody draw. When Alvarez received a six-month suspension for a negative drug test result that he attributed to eating tainted meat, their second fight was postponed.
The Mexican did prevail against Golovkin in the second fight by a razor-thin majority decision, but never completely.
However, he did on Saturday during their third and undoubtedly the last bout.
To face Alvarez for the current WBC, WBO, WBA, and IBF super-middleweight titles, Golovkin has increased his weight to 168 pounds. However, at the age of 40, the Kazakh was unable to match his great rival’s vitality and hand speed.
Both competitors engaged in an internal battle in the opening round, trying to mark the other with powerful lead lefts.
Canelo Alvarez, however, was taking the initiative, controlling the middle of the ring, and shoving Golovkin aside. Giving up ground meant that Golovkin was unable to deliver the powerful blows that have made him so feared.
Instead, Alvarez toiled away, piling up rounds after rounds as he threw his right through gaps and blasted quick lefts to the head. Golovkin was hit by these quick, precise strikes, and he became unusually reluctant to release his own hands.
Alvarez began to vary the intensity of his strikes as the battle went on, occasionally landing left hooks to the body after focusing mostly on the head in the first half of the fight. These shots were less frequent than anticipated, but when they did, they were so powerful that Golovkin was forced to retreat once more.
Alvarez had established an almost unstoppable lead as the fight neared its conclusion. When Golovkin caught him, he came up with solutions, putting together effective combinations and landing the occasional amazing right uppercut to the Kazakh’s jaw.
With the fight running out of time and his chance slipping away, Golovkin increased the pressure in the eleventh round, eventually becoming active behind his strong hooks and many punches.
However, it was already too late. By this point, the challenger need a knockout victory, which never seemed conceivable.
