Unbeatable Aura: Lawrence Okolie wants to start a new chapter in his career and grow into an “unbeatable aura” as he advances in the game.
In front of his required title defence against David Light on March 25, Okolie has signed new trainer SugarHill Steward and is training with him in Florida. Okolie is already the WBO cruiserweight champion.
Some well-known British athletes under Steward’s tutelage include Olympic silver medalist Ben Whittaker and WBC heavyweight champion Tyson Fury. SugarHill, the late, great Emanuel Steward’s nephew, continues the legacy of the renowned Kronk gym.
In that new setting, Okolie hopes to enhance his training.
“His forte is setting everything up, not attempting to punch harder. Hence, take two to three steps before landing a powerful hook or a powerful right hand,” WBO champion speaking to Sky Sports. “You must first finish steps X, Y, and Z before you may make the shot open.
“I just need to relax in the ring and decide what to do next.
“I’m getting better,” he said. “I have a vision for my boxing style.
“I’m good right now. good at maintaining distance while striking forcefully. When someone enters, I can smother them effectively. That’s alright. I’ve won the titles of the world, British, Commonwealth, and European champions. That’s wonderful, but what about the fact that anyone boxing me knows they’ll lose? They always say, ‘I’m barely going to land,’ at every opportunity.
“At the moment, people who look at me think, “Maybe, maybe I can [win].” I aspire to [Gennadiy] Golovkin’s aura of invincibility from that era. I want to start that and continue that.”
Okolie’s first test opponent will be the unbeaten rival David Light, and the Hackney fighter is ready to make a statement.
Okolie predicted that the opponent will be dangerous, fit, quick, and knowledgeable about how to box, be in range, or dodge specific shots.
“Let’s be honest, he’s good; he defeated 20 men. Yet, I want to make a good person appear mediocre.
He continued, “I’ll absolutely box smart and I’ll definitely get the KO. “I’m going to go there, give a performance, and hold a clinic. I won’t force a knockout; instead, I’ll just put on a boxing clinic, and eventually, the knockout should happen.”
If he succeeds, he will have a plethora of alluring opportunities in front of him. One of them would be a defence against Richard Riakporhe, a rival in London.
A famous altercation between Okolie and Riakporhe occurred during the Creed III premiere. Okolie remarked, “It was good to see him close up and personal with the goal of punching me. I have a lot to work with as a result.
