Boxing News: Following her confirmation that she will switch to lightweight for her upcoming fight, which might be announced next week, Mikaela Mayer has set her sights on a matchup with Katie Taylor in 2023.
The American said that she and Alycia Baumgardner, who defeated her by split decision in October to unify the IBF, WBC, and WBO super-featherweight titles, still have “unfinished business.”
However, Mayer’s short-term goals are to advance and establish herself at lightweight so she can go against indisputable champion Taylor.
The 32-year-old stated, “I’m going up to 135 [lbs] for my next fight, and I’m going to start creating a name for myself in that class.
“I’ve always had Katie Taylor on my list. She has accomplished a lot in this sport, and I want to test myself against her because I greatly respect her.
“I will not stop there; I do hope to have that fight made at some point in 2023. I believe I am big enough and skilled enough to reach 140 and 147.
“What I love about today’s women is that we’re not afraid to compete in different weight classes. We visit the sites of the major battles.
“It would be awesome to battle Taylor. Each of us has established ourselves. She’s been proven for many years, without a doubt, but I thought my year was fantastic. I believe I have a sizable following, and I believe viewers want to see that confrontation. Hopefully, we can complete it.”
Mayer will spend Christmas in Colorado Springs with her family and friends, but after that, it will be business as usual as she gets ready for her next bout.
As soon as it’s over, I start to camp, she added. “I’m still awaiting confirmation of the precise fight date, but the agreement is nearly 90% completed.
“I can’t wait to share that, perhaps sometime next week,” she said.
