Boxing Live: Chantelle Cameron put on an incredible performance to defeat Katie Taylor for the first time in her career and retain her title as undisputed super-lightweight world champion.
Taylor’s first home fight in her seven-year professional career took place in Dublin, and despite the fact that she was defending her titles, Cameron was considered to be a significant underdog.
After a tense 10-round bout, Cameron was ultimately rewarded for being the more active fighter by winning a majority decision, bringing her professional record to 18-0.
Taylor, who is still the indisputable lightweight champion and a major influence in the sport, now has a record of 22-1.
After winning, Cameron said in the ring, “It was a close battle. Katie’s a great fighter, the best female boxer there is pound-for-pound, and I showed up for the occasion.”
Any concerns about Cameron’s ability to handle the vitriol she would see from a hostile sold-out audience were swiftly allayed as the 32-year-old set to work right away.
Cameron’s assertiveness was met by a response from Taylor in the second, who displayed the speed and timing that earned her a gold medal at the 2012 Olympics.
Many had anticipated that the 36-year-old would be able to get out to a quick start, but Cameron wasn’t phased and won a close third.
The English boxer opened the battle up during the fourth and fifth of the four two-minute rounds, hitting big strikes regularly as Taylor was at a loss for words.
Taylor’s neatly braided hair draped – maybe irritatingly – over her right eye for most of the fifth round, a testament to Cameron’s dominance.
Even after a furious sixth round in which the two stood closely together and exchanged powerful blows, the hair was ultimately taken care of, but Taylor’s major opposition, Cameron, remained unfazed.
While Taylor gave as good as she received throughout the exchange, it seemed to wear on her more than Cameron, who delivered a commanding seventh that was capped off with possibly her cleanest punch of the contest—a thudding right hand.
Taylor fought back to defeat the eighth and give the fervent home crowd a chance for a comeback, but Cameron finished strong after two close rounds.
At ringside, it was agreed that Cameron had done enough, but there was still a lot of anxiety until it was revealed that two judges had given her the victory with a score of 96-94, while the third judge had declared it a 95-95 tie.
