Boxing News: The biggest test of Katie Taylor’s illustrious career will come in her next match against world light welterweight champion Chantelle Cameron on May 20.
In her first professional match in her home nation, Ireland’s Taylor, 36, will attempt to maintain her unblemished record and become a two-weight undisputed world champion at the 3Arena in Dublin.
In the first women’s fight to headline the card at New York’s Madison Square Garden, the undisputed lightweight champion defeated previously unbeaten Puerto Rican Amanda Serrano in May and earned a historic points decision.
Taylor responded, “Certainly. It will be the biggest challenge of my career. It’s amazing that I’m making my homecoming fight after 22 fights.
“Big-time boxing is returning to Ireland, and this time it’s not just a regular bout; it’s a match between two unquestionable champions.”
After Serrano withdrew from their scheduled rematch due to injury earlier in the month, Taylor issued a social media challenge to Northampton’s unbeaten Cameron.
“One of the most thrilling bouts currently is this one”, according to Taylor. “Chantelle was the obvious choice as soon as I learned Serrano was unavailable.”
It will be the first time two unbeaten and unchallenged incumbent world champions have faced each other in the sport, and Cameron has won all 17 of her professional matches.
While I do have more expertise in the biggest fights, Taylor stated, “I think this could be another contender for fight of the year.
“I’ve faced stronger opposition, and I’ll be better than ever prepared psychologically, physically, and spiritually.
“I do anticipate a challenging contest, of course, but by the grace of God, I’ll be leaving as the undisputed champion in two weight classes.
“She is the unquestioned champion, has a pristine career, and has the style to make this another epic.
In November in Abu Dhabi, Cameron defeated American Jessica McCaskill by unanimous decision to become the first indisputable female champion of the UK.
“I’ve got to say, all thanks to Katie,” said Cameron. “Women’s boxing is booming, and none of us women would be here if it weren’t for Katie and (American three-weight world champion) Claressa (Shields).
“There is a great deal of respect. But I’m coming here to win because this is my career and my legacy.
“Katie is the best women’s fighter there is, pound for pound, and if I can win, I can retire from boxing one day knowing that I beat the best.”
