Lightweight Title: Moving up to lightweight, Mikaela Mayer will attempt to compel Katie Taylor to accept a challenge.
Alycia Baumgardner defeated American super-featherweight champion Mayer by a split decision in their most recent match, a decision that Mayer continues to contest.
On April 15, Mayer will compete in her next bout, a 135-pound match against Christina Linardatou.
The opponent was Linardatou, who did defeat Baumgardner. “I didn’t want to take a step back in any manner, so I informed my team that I wanted to take on a strong competitor,” Mayer said to Sky Sports.
“She is a strong candidate. Only Delfine Persoon and Katie Taylor have defeated her.
“I need a skilled boxer to push me and inspire me.”
Mayer already has a great reputation. Mayer anticipates that the winner will eventually be announced as the mandatory challenger for the WBO world title, one of the belts that undisputed champion Taylor holds since she is the WBO’s No. 1 contender at lightweight and Linardatou is their No. 3.
The best course of action, according to Mayer, is to make it necessary. “For my career, I want to achieve this. I want to come out strong, take on the finest competitors, and put on the biggest spectacles.
“That was my intention. My intention was to pursue the championship once I reached 135 pounds. My objective is to compete for the title in every division. The prospect of being back in contention for a world title after winning this fight excites me much.”
“It only demonstrates how excellent women’s boxing is developing. I’ve always argued that your career shouldn’t be defined by one defeat. It shouldn’t matter as long as you’re testing yourself against top-notch opponents and putting up thrilling battles.
“When I go back and challenge a top competitor like Linardatou, I feel like I’m demonstrating that. I’m going to defeat her and put myself back in contention to win the title of world champion.”
Mayer does not anticipate Linardatou to be an easy match.
