Boxing News: If he still has the same “hunger,” Anthony Joshua can win back the world heavyweight title, but Audley Harrison thinks a bout with Deontay Wilder would be dangerous.
When he lost to Oleksandr Usyk in a rematch last year, Joshua was unable to win back the WBA, IBF, and WBO titles. Nevertheless, the 33-year-old is still in the running for a world championship after making a comeback in April and defeating Jermaine Franklin by unanimous decision.
“You know, he’s [Joshua] made so much money, and I heard him do an interview saying he’s in it for the money,” Harrison said to Sky Sports.
“At this point, isn’t the glory the only thing keeping you going after you’ve made that much money? We don’t get out of bed for the money; we get out of bed for the glory.
“That’s what inspired him to compete for world titles and go to the Olympics. The money is only a bonus.
It will be challenging if he has lost the will to pursue glory since he should be considering how to define his legacy by reversing that loss. He has to have that as his objective and motivation.
“He is incapable of considering the necessity to disprove others. You must do it for yourself; you cannot do it for the critics. Joshua must do it. He must be motivated to get to the top and secure a global championship for himself.
“If he truly wants to do it for him, I think he can. If he considers his legacy and wants to be inducted into the Hall of Fame. He must return to that. He already has enough money, therefore he can’t do it for pay.
“He must be driven by the desire to achieve greatness for himself and to exact revenge on the offender. All it needs to be about is that.
“All Lennox [Lewis] cared about was getting even after he lost to Hasim Rahman. Retribution is all you need as warriors to support you.”
Joshua’s future plans may include a matchup with Wilder, as rumours say that the heavyweight tandem may eventually meet at the end of the year in Saudi Arabia.
“Wilder is undoubtedly a risky opponent for AJ since he has amassed enough wealth and is just returning to establish a legacy,” according to Harrison.
“That battle was significant. And Deontay believes he can defeat AJ. He has always believed he can defeat AJ, just as he has always believed he can defeat Tyson [Fury], but Tyson has shown him otherwise.”
