Boxing News: After pledging to “whoop” Zak Chelli in their match on Saturday, Anthony Sims has his sights set on a confrontation with former world champion Liam Smith.
In a 10-round contest on the BOXXER programme, the American, who enters the fight at Wembley Arena with a 23-1 (20) record, is expected to give English champion Chelli (12-1-1, (6)) possibly his toughest test to date.
Sims Jr., though, has his sights set on Chris Eubank Jr.’s recent victor Smith in the future, and the 27-year-old felt there was nothing to worry about in the former WBO super-welterweight champion’s dramatic fourth-round knockout of his British opponent.
“Liam Smith, who? When questioned if he observed something possibly harmful in the Liverpudlian,” Sims responded, “No, I simply saw Chris Eubank with his hands down, boxing badly, to be honest. I was quite disappointed with the performance; I hadn’t anticipated him to appear that way.”
“It was a good performance, but he wasn’t the Chris Eubank we’re used to seeing the fight. Chris Eubank, who was trained by Eubank Jr., was the opponent. Chris Eubank did not display the aggressive, counterpunching fighting style of his father.
“He [Smith] and his brother [Callum] mastered the fundamentals to become champions. Nothing they accomplish is particularly noteworthy or attractive. They enter and conduct business, carry out the strategy, and are professionals.
“It seems like a decent fight to me. It will come down to knowledge for the Englishman because he is experienced and knowledgeable. It will depend on who wants it more and the plan, even though we both have two arms, and two legs, are the same height, and weigh the same.”
When Chelli last competed, he defeated Germaine Brown in a 10-round fight there to win the English super-middleweight championship by unanimous decision.
Sims has taken note of the 25-year-strengths, old’s but he thinks his power, which has helped him prevail inside the distance in 20 of his 24 professional matches, will give him trouble.
Sims described him as a “tough, strong up-and-coming warrior.” “I’ve watched his video, but I never undervalue or ignore a competitor because I’m a professional.
“Regardless of their background, level of combat experience, or other factors, it is simply something you don’t do. A fighter is never overlooked.
“I can see he’s aggressive, but he hasn’t engaged in combat with a powerful opponent. I have a tad of strength.”
Sims even gave a sneak preview of his potential Liam Smith criticism this weekend, telling Sky Sports: “I’m going to whoop him [Chelli], I’m going to grab the mike, and I’m going to say what I’m going to say.”
