Undisputed Title: On Saturday night in Detroit, Claressa Shields defeated Maricela Cornejo in a landslide unanimous decision to successfully defend her undisputed middleweight title.
With a score of 100-89 on one card and 100-90 on the other two, Shields (14-0, 2 KOs) prevailed.
She responded, “You got to see the best of me tonight. The only thing I could have done better today was get a knockout, and I think the punches I landed would have knocked out a lot of females. Maricela is strong and knowledgeable.”
Shields has won two Olympic gold medals in addition to welterweight, middleweight, and super middleweight championships in the professional ring.
Since more than four years ago, Cornejo (16-6) hasn’t defeated a team with a winning record. She began by expressing gratitude to Shields.
“You really are the GWOAT [greatest woman of all time], and you’ve started a trend in women’s boxing, she remarked. I’m prepared to return to 154 pounds or even 147 pounds after battling you.”
With a powerful jab and movement away from Shields’ right hand, Cornejo caused some difficulty for Shields in the first rounds. She attempted to produce enough force to stop the champion from advancing, but she was unable.
In the fifth round, Shields cut Cornejo over her right eye, and in the seventh, she was injured by a string of moves. Cornejo was knocked into the ropes by a straight right, but Shields was unable to finish her before the round finished.
Although Cornejo grew weary in the closing rounds, he managed to hold off the champion and continue until the final buzzer.
Shields has not completely ruled out an MMA comeback. In 2021, she engaged in two fights, winning one and losing the other.
Shields stated, “I have some choices to make moving forward. Because boxing is what I do best, I try to concentrate on it, but I have no issues performing MMA. I believe I can win there as well if I give it two years.”
