Joshua’s new ranking is another crucial step toward his taking on Tyson Fury, the WBC heavyweight champion, while negotiations for an all-British heavyweight fight are still ongoing.
Sulaiman has informed Sky Sports that Joshua is now qualified to challenge Fury for the heavyweight championship as a result of this rating.
Joshua has been recognised for his accomplishments by being listed in the WBC rankings, he added.
Joshua’s loss to Usyk in their rematch left him unable to reclaim the WBO, WBA, and IBF heavyweight crowns, but that set him up to take on Fury for the WBC crown.
“He was not rated before because he was champion of other organisations and then he was signed to fight for other organisations,” Sulaiman told Sky Sports.
To be a suitable opponent for Fury to undertake a voluntary title defence against, Joshua required this ranking.
Joshua is now qualified to take on Fury, Sulaiman said in response to the question.
Furthermore, Fury can fight Joshua on their suggested date of December 3 because there are no present mandatory duties for the WBC belt that would prevent it.
As Fury’s most recent contest, in which he defeated Dillian Whyte at Wembley Stadium in April, was a mandatory defence, the champion now has the opportunity to face a willing opponent.
The heavyweight who will ultimately be the mandatory challenger for the WBC belt won’t be decided until at least November at the WBC’s convention in Acapulco, with fights occurring before then being designated as eliminators, like Andy Ruiz’s victory over Luis Ortiz and Deontay Wilder’s upcoming fight with Robert Helenius in October.
Anthony Joshua can challenge Tyson Fury for their championship and aim to become a three-time heavyweight world champion without interference from the WBC. The fighters and their teams simply need to come to an agreement at this point.
