Olympic Revenge: Joe Joyce anticipates competing for a world title in 2023 following a breakthrough victory over Joseph Parker last year.
While he is focused on that aim, he wants Frazer Clarke, an ex-GB teammate and former amateur adversary, to exact some justice on his behalf.
In the 2016 Olympic final, Joyce was defeated by France’s Tony Yoka in a hotly contested decision. Yoka, now a professional boxer too, battles Carlos Takam in Paris on March 11.
Clarke will attempt to make it 6-0 in professional competition on March 25 in Manchester after winning the super-heavyweight bronze medal at the Rio Olympic Games last year.
Later, Joyce wants to witness Clarke punch Yoka.
“Please beat Yoka up, Frazer!”Joyce said.
“That might lead to a battle in the future,” Joyce told Sky Sports.
“I’m glad Frazer has finally gone through and is beginning to work and work his way up. He could beat up Yoka for me in a battle even!
“There are some terrific battles. He should compete against Nathan Gorman, Sol Dacres, and Fabio Wardley (the British champion), in my opinion. They’re even battles he might get in the near future; they’re intriguing matches for him.”
These are the types of battles that might lead Clarke to a potential conflict with Joyce as well. They frequently boxed in amateur competitions, and Joyce could picture them continuing their battle in professional competition.
Despite the fact that Joyce prevailed in every match they had as amateurs, according to Joyce, Clarke had grown to be a formidable foe and would still be so as a professional.
“The first battle was an easy win because I halted him and caused swelling in his eye. But, I believe that his mind made him harder as time went on. He was on [GB] first and is younger than I am. I nearly assisted him in coming through since we assisted one another during our competitive sparring match with [Anthony] Joshua as well,” Joyce clarified.
He said, “I was always winning [international] events. We fought, and the second fight was rougher and went the distance. It came to the point where he was winning the tournaments. With each bout, it became increasingly difficult until we were in a photo finish for the Olympic [place].
“It would have been difficult to say whether I would have qualified for Rio 2016 if I hadn’t defeated him in the [last] ABAs. Then I had to defeat him.”
