Joshua Rematch: Dillian Whyte has questioned Anthony Joshua’s “seriousness” regarding a heavyweight rematch, claiming that conversations do not “seem real.”
The Brixton man had wanted to clinch a second professional battle against Joshua, reigniting a feud that dates back to the amateur ranks, but talks between the two boxers have stalled.
Previously, talks for a rematch at Wembley Stadium in 2019 fell through, with Joshua instead focusing on his US debut, which ended in defeat to Andy Ruiz Jr.
“It’s a big fight, it’s eight weeks away, and there’s no communication, nothing,” Whyte said, according to Sky Sports. “There is nothing. Absolutely nothing. They’re just wasting time squabbling.
“It doesn’t seem real. They’re attempting to put me in the same situation they were in a few years ago, saying, ‘Oh, we’re attempting to make the Joshua fight.’
“Big fights take time. There’s a lot going on, a lot of fine print, and this team wants that and that team wants that. A lot of things are going on. Making these massive conflicts takes a long period.”
But Whyte is optimistic that the Joshua bout will take place within the next few months.
“Stranger things have happened in heavyweight boxing. Obviously, I’ll continue to train and try to stay focused and prepared in case anything happens. Because I’ve wanted to fight Joshua since the day I lost to him in 2015,” he explained.
“The score is now 1-1. He’s already won one. I beat him in the amateurs, then he beat me in the professionals, so I’m looking to settle the score.
“I would love nothing more than to have a chance to avenge my defeat,” Whyte said. “I’m just going to war. I want to go to war because I believe it’s the best way to battle him, to put pressure on him, to back him up, and to put him on the back foot as soon as possible, and I’m powerful enough and large enough to do it.
“I obviously carry enough power to back him up and knock him out.”
He also feels it is the best bout for Anthony Joshua. “I’m someone who will always get in his head and will always be able to get in his head and throw him off his game plan. That’s simply the way it is,” Whyte said.
