Paul vs Fury: After defeating Jake Paul in a split decision, Tommy Fury claimed that the “weight of the world” had been lifted off his shoulders.
After being knocked down in the eighth round, Fury prevailed in a close eight-round fight, with two judges’ scores of 76-73 in his favour and one judge’s score of 75-74 for Paul, who suffered the first loss of his boxing career.
Fury was Paul’s first professional opponent, and with his victory, the British cruiserweight believes a “weight from his shoulders” that had “consumed” him in the lead-up to the fight has been lifted. Paul has upended the world of boxing by using his social media profile to forge a career in the sport.
“The battle was incredible. An extremely enjoyable fight that lasted eight rounds,” according to Fury.
“Jake was a rough young man. He took a lot of shots and was still there so credit to him.
“He could have fought anyone and faced much easier opponents, but I can admire that he chose to challenge himself instead.
“Remember, I’m only 23 years old, yet tonight I carried the weight of the entire planet on my shoulders.
“There was a tonne going on, my wife had just given birth three weeks earlier, and I’m really glad I came out here with my dad and my team because we are leaving with a victory and a championship belt.
“Given that this has been the focus of my life for the past two and a half years, it is simply the best feeling in the world.
“You are not a true fighter because you pulled out of two battles and are afraid of Jake Paul, people said as you left the room.
“I proved to everyone tonight that I have no fear of anyone and that I can hold my own at the big dance.
“Now, what are they able to say? I prevailed in the ring battle between Jake Paul and myself.”
After the fight, Fury cut a tearful figure as he celebrated his success. But, he emphasised that the response was about far more than just defeating Paul and that it was also about “silencing” social media haters after three years of issues that repeatedly delayed the fight.
“It wasn’t about defeating Jake Paul,” he continued, “it was about getting through all I had been through over the last three years.”
“Everything is against me, from the broken rib to being denied entry to the US to the remarks on social media.”
