Paul vs Fury: Tommy Fury, who was joined on stage by his half-brother and heavyweight champion Tyson Fury, threatened to knock Jake Paul out “in four rounds”; the pair’s eight-round contest on Sunday will earn the winner a world ranking at cruiserweight, the WBC revealed in a surprise move.
Jake Paul and Tommy Fury were separated during a hectic weigh-in before their fight in Saudi Arabia on Sunday.
As the two fighters engaged in a heated exchange that culminated with a shove by Fury, the half-brother of heavyweight champion Tyson Fury, who was on stage with him, informed the assembled media: “His time is up tomorrow night. Jake Paul will no longer compete in boxing.
“I’m going to knock this man out in four rounds.”
Paul was more reserved in his response, alleging Fury’s theatrics were staged for the cameras.
“He’s acting on stage, getting all fired up, pretending to be his brother,” Paul explained. “This professional fighter is going down; it’s straightforward and easy.
“I’m prepared, calm, cool, and collected. This is my job. He’s trembling on stage, and you can see the butterflies in his stomach. I’m at ease.”
Fury weighed 184.5 pounds for the fight, while Paul weighed 183.6 pounds.
Paul rose to prominence as a social media influencer before embarking on a boxing career that has seen him win every match yet face a slew of stars from other sports. Fury will be his first opponent with a boxing background, whereas he rose to stardom as a contestant on the TV show Love Island.
Although their eight-round fight on Sunday is scheduled for a 185-pound catchweight, the WBC has confirmed that the winner would be given a world rating at cruiserweight.
In reality, this is a well-matched contest between two unbeaten prospects wanting to establish themselves as boxers. It was postponed twice before being rescheduled for this Sunday, and the verbal sparring between the two has sparked an ill-tempered rivalry in the lead-up.
