Luke Watkins: Luke “The Duke” Watkins has called Viddal Riley a “waste of time” in relation to a potential matchup between the two British cruiserweight rivals.
From October 2017 through June 2018, when he lost to Lawrence Okolie, Watkins held the Commonwealth cruiserweight championship.
After being out-pointed by Isaac Chamberlain in October 2018, the 32-year-old is currently on a three-fight winning streak. He most recently defeated Iain Martell in July.
Riley has advanced in his professional career over the past year and is currently preparing for his fourth fight of 2022 on the November 12 card at the AO Arena in Manchester. Riley has a sizable social media following thanks to his YouTube success.
Watkins declared, “These folks are a waste of time.” “I’m interested in the British race winner and anything beyond that.
“I’m not here to amuse the amateur boxers who depend on my reputation for influence.”
After a discouraging two-year absence from the ring, Riley has frequently expressed his desire to return. In his pursuit of title contention, Riley hopes to fight more than four times in 2019.
The 25-year-old has his sights set on the top of the cruiserweight division after a highlight-reel knockout victory over Jone Volau in the first round.
Riley stated on the Toe2Toe podcast that the cruiserweight division is the best division in Britain. “I started this trip because I want to be a part of it; it’s what I was meant to do.
“Due to the current popularity of this division, I have the chance to demonstrate my abilities against reputable opponents, and winning those matches helps the overall YouTube baggage to become a little bit lighter.
“Once I start winning those fights, you can’t doubt me with that level of opposition. They will appear at the appropriate time, but I’m glad to be a part of it because I naturally think I can win those matches.”
Riley, a 6-0 cruiserweight who is presently rated 15th in the UK, says he wants to have acquired a belt “of some kind” by the end of 2023.
He thinks he is making progress in demonstrating that he is much more valuable than his online antics.
Although he may have a significant social presence, he continued, “I have goals and objectives that involve being in the ring, winning specific titles, and being a part of this mix.”
“I already know that I’m more marketable than everybody else, so that’s nice. But the ring results are what will satisfy me.”
