Heavyweight World Champion: In a prospective future showdown against Britain’s Dillian Whyte, Stephan Shaw asserts that he is confident in his ability to defeat Whyte and emerge as America’s next heavyweight boxing champion.
The risky Efe Ajagba will be the opponent for the 30-year-old from St. Louis, Missouri, on Saturday night in New York, giving him the chance to make a statement.
Since turning professional in 2013, Shaw has amassed a perfect 18-0 record with 13 knockouts, but last year, when he scored three spectacular victories, his career finally gained genuine traction.
Shaw told Sky Sports, “I feel like this is a tremendous chance for me.” This will attract more attention and make Stephan Shaw known as a heavyweight contender in the world.
“I simply want to demonstrate that I am on par with the greatest in the world. Only some of the top boxers in the world, not just heavyweights.
“I’m extremely certain that I can defeat a man of this calibre, and I want to prove it.”
The United States is in desperate need of a new star in boxing’s most popular division, while Deontay Wilder is back in action and looking for a chance to become a two-time world champion following his losses to Tyson Fury.
Unbeaten The 23-year-old Jared “Big Baby” Anderson has been hailed as the heavyweight boxing of the future in America, but “Big Shot” Shaw insists he is first in line.
He declared, “I definitely feel like I’m the future American heavyweight world champion.”
“This has been my practice for a while. I’ve been a pro since I was 21 years old, and it almost makes me sad that the attention is just now beginning to focus on me.
“It’s not like other men are competing against top-tier opponents, so no one is saying, oh, he’s already beaten great fighters.” Just that they are competing against C-level fighters in main-level TV spots.
“And here I am in my first genuine main event, going up against a competitor with Olympic experience.”
Shaw might already be well-known in the UK if events had turned out the way he had hoped.
Shaw expressed his desire to fight in the United Kingdom. “My first main event fight was scheduled to take place in 2021 when I would face Jermaine Franklin. I recall Eddie Hearn suggested that the victor of that fight would face Dillian Whyte in the future.
“But Jermaine Franklin left Covid with four days’ notice. Then, in a flash, he wound up fighting Dillian Whyte.
“I would have loved to have been given the chance. To reach that plateau, Franklin did not engage in combat with any opponents of comparable calibre to Efe Ajagba.”
After a close match at Wembley Arena in November, Whyte defeated Franklin by a majority vote.
“He performed admirably against Dillian Whyte,” Shaw added. “I felt that he could have done even better. I believed I was capable of defeating Dillian Whyte and still am.”
“I think that would be an awesome fight.”
