Undisputed Super-Middleweight Title: According to promoter Ben-Shalom, Savannah Marshall might take fight Franchon Crews-Dezurn for the undisputed super-middleweight title this year.
When Baltimore’s Crews-Dezurn defeated Elin Cederroos in 2017, she unified the WBC, WBO, IBF, and WBA world titles.
Marshall, a former WBO champion, was defeated by Claressa Shields for the undisputed middleweight belt in October, but she’s motivated to win her next fight and get back to competing at the highest level.
Ben Shalom of BOXXER believes that Marshall can easily transition to super-middleweight and that Crews-Dezurn would be the ideal matchup for her to bounce back from a loss.
“I am aware that Savannah wants to fight. Another major brawl is taking place,” Shalom told Sky Sports. She obviously wants to rejoin the fray right away after October. She is a step above most middleweight competitors, and I believe she wants to immediately compete in large matches.
“I know she wants the Claressa rematch if it can’t be that right away.”
Crews-Dezurn versus Marshall, in Shalom’s opinion, can be scheduled for the first half of 2023.
“They attempted to make that fight over here in October, and he expressed his confidence that it will take place this year,” he said.
Marshall was described by Shalom as wanting titles immediately. She misplaced her belt. She’s had a difficult few months, and based on our conversations, I believe she would find it very appealing to go up a weight division and earn some additional belts.
Hopefully, that will happen in the second half of the year.
If Marshall were to defeat Crews-Dezurn, not only would that elevate her to the top super-middleweight in the world, but it would also open the door for a potentially major rematch with Claressa Shields in which they would fight undisputed versus undisputed.
“I know Peter Fury, her trainer, and Savannah Marshall don’t intend to dally, so they’re going right back in. Since Crews-Dezurn has held both titles for some time and is close to Claressa, I don’t see those two engaging in combat; therefore, this is the fight that needs to take place,” explained Shalom.
“I believe this year’s Savannah Marshall will be even better than the one we saw last year, one who has significant experience from October and one who will be eager to advance and perhaps be able to fight Claressa once again at the end of the year,” said Marshall.
