Jake Paul has praised the WBC’s decision to award a world ranking to the victor of his fight with Tommy Fury.
The WBC decision was surprising because Fury will be the social media star’s first opponent in boxing history.
Paul nonetheless insists that it “makes logic”.
“I believe it’s fine if they want to rank me. It’s not my decision. “I’m not in charge of the WBC or anything they want to do,” Paul told Sky Sports.
“I’m challenging myself more than most pro fighters, all pro fighters, in their seventh battle. Most professional fighters in their seventh battle face opponents with losing records.
“In my seventh bout, I’m up against Tommy Fury, a legendary bloodline fighter who is 8-0. I’ve beaten a lot of fighters in the cruiserweight rankings in sparring, so that makes sense to me. However, of course, the purists will always be upset with me.”
He went on to say: “There’s a lot of buzz surrounding it. He is well-known. His brother is the world heavyweight champion. He’s been doing it since he was ten years old; he’s a professional boxer of similar age and weight. He has the greater range. I have advantages over you.”
It’s risky to push rookie fighters too far, too fast. Paul, on the other hand, is unconcerned.
“We’ve already passed the moving too fast’ point. “This is a rollercoaster ride, and it appears to be on schedule for the speed that I’m travelling at,” he said.
“I believe this is the fastest meteoric climb in boxing history. Nobody has ever done that many pay-per-views so early on. Nobody has ever moved as quickly as this. Nobody has dared to challenge themselves. No one has ever had such significant experiences so early in their career. Ever.
“I hope it’s an endless ride. I enjoy this activity, and I’m taking it day by day, doing my best every day. In and out of the gym to improve boxing and have fun on this ride.”
Before this bout with Tommy Fury, Paul fought another influencer and sportsperson with no boxing expertise, bolstered by his social media fame. This method defies conventional boxing reasoning.
“I think the boxing purists are rooting for Tommy because they want him to keep the sport safe,” Paul remarked.
“There’s a lot of emotion, a lot of high stakes when people care about the outcome of a fight.
“This is proving to be the biggest bout up to date in terms of promotion, and enthusiasm. Everyone is invested in this fight: grandmas, grandpas, youngsters, 20-year-olds, 30-year-olds, boxing purists, boxing casuals.”
