Boxing Match: Jamaine Ortiz was defeated by Vasiliy Lomachenko via a unanimous decision in the Madison Square Garden Theater in New York.
The three judges awarded the victory to the former world champion from Ukraine with scores of 115–113, 116–112, and 117–111. However, those totals didn’t adequately convey the intensity of the contest.
When Russia invaded Ukraine earlier this year, Lomachenko returned to his native country to join the Territorial Defense forces. He had earlier quit a major title championship.
After leaving Ukraine and returning to training, Ortiz was his first opponent. The American, who was eight years younger than the other man, was taller and had a better reach. In the first round, he used dynamic energy to utilise those dimensions.
Long-range blows from Ortiz were challenging, and he kept himself busy enough to keep the Ukrainian southpaw at bay. Dark bruising behind Lomachenko’s right eye was visible as early as the first round.
Lomachenko struggled in these early rounds to find his own rhythm. Ortiz hit him hard and with intensity, knocking him off balance. The Ukrainian responded by speeding up his own production. He started firing off quick lead left crosses and strong straight shots to Ortiz’s head as the fight went on.
Ortiz’s personal gait was quick and fluid. Lomachenko was forced to back off by focused attacks.
The Ukrainian made sure to do well in the final two rounds. As the bout came to a close, he pushed forward and began to throw punch combos together.
Following the fight, Lomachenko remarked, “I’m thrilled, I’m happy to be back in the ring and produce this tremendous display.
He is a skilled fighter who is fierce.
Lomachenko struggled mightily to win the match. You already know what drove me: four belts, he said.
Devin Haney, the indisputable lightweight champion and owner of the four championships Lomachenko desires, was present.
He could not yet confirm a strategy to counter Lomachenko, but he did invite negotiation. “Although I don’t think it was the best performance, I’m confident that if Loma and I were to square off, the show would be far better. Thank you, and perhaps we can continue “said Haney.
