T20I Captain: Rashid Khan, an all-around player for Afghanistan, has been selected as the team’s new T20I captain. After the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022 ended in November, the former captain Mohammad Nabi retired from the position. The Afghanistan team will be led by Rashid, the master of spin bowling, in the game’s shortest format.
Afghanistan’s World Cup campaign was hampered by rain, which forced the cancellation of two of their games and led to losses in the other three. They were unable to win any games in the main event as a result. They finished the T20 World Cup with two points, both earned from postponed games due to rain.
Nabi made the decision to leave the position after a disappointing performance. Since then, the Afghanistan Cricket Board has been searching for the ideal candidate for the job. On December 29, Rashid was ultimately named the team’s T20I captain.
“Rashid Khan is a well-known figure in Afghan cricket. He has a vast amount of experience playing the format all around the world, which will enable him to advance the squad in the format. We are glad to have Rashid Khan back as our captain for the T20I format because he has experience guiding AfghanAtalan in all three formats. He will triumph and bring greater glory to the country, I am confident, said Mirwais Ashraf,” chairman of the ACB.
“Captaincy carries a lot of responsibility. I have prior experience as the leader of my country, and there is a terrific group of individuals with whom I get along well and feel at ease. Rashid Khan told ACB on his appointment, we will attempt to stick together, will work hard to put things on the right track and restore pride and joy to our country and nation.”
After Bangladesh’s Shakib Al Hassan (128) and New Zealand’s Tim Southee (138), Rashid Khan is now the third-highest wicket-taker in the T20I format (134). He has played for Afghanistan in 74 T20I matches so far, and he has claimed 122 victims. He is well-known in franchise cricket as well, having participated in 361 T20 games since 2015 for 15 different clubs across the globe.
In terms of overall wickets taken, he ranks behind Dwayne Bravo (614) as the second-most successful bowler in the format with 491 wickets. Rashid Khan will serve as Afghanistan’s captain for the first time since 2019 when the national team of Afghanistan visits the UAE in February to compete in three Twenty20 Internationals against the hosts.
