Cricket Live: Bangladesh’s cricket team made history earlier this week when they defeated Afghanistan in a one-off Test. Bangladesh’s 546-run triumph against their Asian rivals, the third highest by a margin of runs, underlined their improvement in the longest version of the game. In an interview following his team’s strong performance, Bangladesh’s Head Coach Chandika Hathurusingha described it as “more than a Test win.”
The Litton Das-led team dominated the visitors from the start, and their dominance finally converted into a massive win. While the quality of the victory was significant in and of itself, head coach Hathurusingha praised the players’ preparedness for the one-off match.
“I’m not sure if you’ve seen it, but I posted it on social media saying it’s more than a Test win.” What I meant was, the way we prepared for this game, which we hadn’t done before…like how we prepared for the fast and green track, and so I believed that would be a great win for us to play on that sort of wicket and then come out with flying colours,” Hathurusingha said at a news conference on Sunday.
Shanto and Joy soothed the tension in the locker room: Hathurusingha
The triumph for the home team was built on Najmul Shanto’s record-breaking effort, as the top-order batsman hammered hundreds in both innings. While Hathurusingha commended the teenager for his aggressive attitude at the crease in difficult batting circumstances, he also praised the pacers for their discipline on what appeared to be a bowling-friendly surface.
“If the conditions are difficult, we will be smart enough to bat as the conditions allow. Similarly, we must praise [Najmul Hossain] Shanto for the way he batted in the first two innings, especially the first two hours, he and [Mahmudul Hasan] Joy… the way they batted, soothed everyone’s concerns in the dressing room.
The nice thing is that they didn’t get carried away on that fast and bouncy wicket. The bowling was excellent, with a really professional attitude. They didn’t use the bouncer just to use it, and most of the dismissals were on the front foot, so those small details indicate how far those fast bowlers have gone. I am overjoyed,” he continued.
