Cricket News: The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 has provided selectors with plenty of choices for the T20 World Cup in Australia later this year. The selection committee, which will finally choose a 15-member squad for the big competition, will have a happy headache, although senior cricketers and analysts have continued to back a number of excellent players. Matthew Hayden, an Australian star, is one of those who has backed a 31-year-old uncapped Indian for the T20 World Cup in October.
Hayden mentioned Sunrisers Hyderabad batsman Rahul Tripathi, who has long gone unnoticed despite his impressive performances. Tripathi has 393 runs in 13 matches this season, with an average of 39.30 and a strike rate of 161.72. The total also includes three half-centuries, the highest of which is 76.
In an interview with Star Sports, Hayden praised Tripathi’s talents and predicted that he may be a “dangerous” batting option for India on Australia’s bouncy pitches.
“I just love his ability to go hard up front. The way Tripathi is taking the responsibility to strike the ball hard is brilliant. I think he has the real potential in the future to go all the way to the international level,” Hayden said.
“He’s a dangerous striker of the ball, someone who plays on both sides of the wicket. His ability to play short-pitched balls at ease impresses me in particular. You get him to Australia (for the T20 WC) because he can play those brilliant shots on the bouncy pitches there,” he added.
While the T20 World Cup squad is yet to be announced, India will play four T20I series before the tournament, beginning with a three-match series against South Africa at home in June. And Tripathi could be a factor in the series’ outcome.
On Sunday, SRH will play Punjab Kings at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai in their final IPL 2022 encounter.
