Former England captain: When Brendon McCullum took over as England’s red-ball coach and began teaching the ultra-aggressive ‘Bazball’ strategy into the batters’ game, cricket fans questioned if Joe Root would be able to fill the role. The 32-year-old wasn’t recognised for his great strike rate. He was similarly battling a few years ago to transform his fifties into hundreds. The right-hander’s talent, on the other hand, was undeniable.
The best players are constantly able to adapt to varied forms and conditions. Root has been no exception. He took to ‘Bazball’ like a fish to water. Tim Southee, Pat Cummins, and Scott Boland have all been reverse-scooped for sixes by him. Root has also converted his starts into three-figure totals. Root hit a smooth 152-ball 118 in the first innings of the first Ashes Test, his 30th Test century. Root scored 46 runs in the second inning on just 55 balls.
Former England captain Nasser Hussain praised Nasser Hussain for some helpful tips that helped him turn his starts into huge runs and control his game in Test cricket.
“Nasser Hussain gave me some information about modes of dismissal in different periods of my innings and how to manage my game,” Root explained to the BBC. “It’s nice to know there are people out there willing to help, even if it can appear on occasion that they are trying to rip your game apart. He went out of his way to make a difference in my career, which I appreciated since it was a tremendous benefit.”
Prior to 2022, Root has 53 half-centuries and 23 centuries. He has seven centuries and five half-centuries since then.
‘It was about getting out there to have some peace and quiet, some time to myself,’ Joe Root says of his recovery after a spell of poor form.
A captain’s job is a demanding one. When considering the role of England’s red-ball captain, the demand level may just go up a notch. One of the numerous reasons for this is the importance that English fans and the England Cricket Board (ECB) place on red-ball cricket.
For five years as England’s red-ball captain, Root had to cope with a lot of pressure. During his stint, he said that he wasn’t having as much fun hitting as he used to. He did, however, say that blocking out extraneous distractions and focusing solely on the game helped him get back to his best.
