Mumbai Indians: The five-time winners of the Indian Premier League, Mumbai Indians (MI), are allegedly planning to extend a one-year deal to England’s top bowler Jofra Archer. It should be noted that if the 28-year-old accepts the offer, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) will then need approval from the team to let him play for the national side once more. If MI is able to pull this off, it will be an extremely unusual event.
Notably, Mumbai Indians acquired Jofra Archer at the 2022 IPL auction despite being aware that the cricketer would be unable to participate in even one game of the league.
Later, Jofra was signed by MI Cape Town in time for the first SA20 league, when he took 10 wickets in six games. The player, who was born in Barbados, only participated in five games in the IPL 2023 and took two wickets before returning home.
Even if his fitness is a huge worry, MI is all set back the cricketer and may now end up dictating his schedule (should Jofra sign any such deal) in order to maintain him in shape for the many franchise-based events that MI are a part of. While the two sides have not yet had this talk, a story from the Daily Mail implies that the franchise is prepared to put everything on the line.
According to reports, athletes like Alex Hales can possibly receive such offers. The England international isn’t a regular member of the national squad, which is why a certain side (name withheld) is eager to sign him. In IPL 2022, he was signed by Kolkata Knight Riders, however, the opener opted not to compete in order to balance his workload.
Trent Boult, a Kiwi bowler, is one of the favourites to be signed by an IPL team. The cricketer chose not to sign the central contract for New Zealand in 2022, making him available to sign a similar contract with any of the teams. He now represents the Rajasthan Royals in the IPL, a league that also has the Palace Royals and Barbados Royals as clubs.
