Following charges against the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa left-arm spinner for two violations, including failing to report a fraudulent approach, the PCB suspended Asif Afridi in accordance with its anti-corruption code. Asif missed the majority of the current National T20 Cup and is not permitted to participate in any cricket-related activities until the PCB’s anti-corruption team has concluded its investigation into the case.
According to clause 4.7.1 of the PCB’s constitution, which gives the board discretion in situations “where it judges that the integrity of the sport could otherwise be substantially damaged,” Asif has been suspended immediately, though the PCB has not disclosed the specifics of the charges. Asif now has up to 14 days to reply to the accusations levelled against him.
Asif, 35, hasn’t secured a spot in the starting lineup since his lone T20 game for KPK in the National T20 Cup on August 31 in Rawalpindi against Central Punjab. He made one appearance, scored one run off one ball, and had four overs with a return of 2 for 24.
Asif Afridi received a call-up to the Pakistani team earlier this year for the home series against Australia, but he was left off the starting lineup. He was chosen as cover for Mohammad Nawaz, who had missed a portion of the PSL due to injury, after a standout PSL season in which he picked up eight wickets in five matches for Multan Sultans while returning an economy rate of 6.5.
The PCB has recently dealt with a number of cases involving alleged corruption. The batter Umar Akmal was most recently suspended for failing to report spot-fixing approaches made to him prior to the commencement of PSL 2020. The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) lowered his suspension from 18 months to 12 months, but the PCB imposed a requirement that Akmal pays a fine of PKR 4.25 million and participate in a rehabilitation programme before he could be reintegrated.
