Ranji Trophy 2022-23: The umpires on Wednesday declared the Railways vs. Punjab Ranji Trophy game at the Karnail Singh Stadium in New Delhi “dangerous,” and it will now resume. The Ranji Trophy match had to be suspended after it was determined that it was not fit for play by on-field umpires K Madanagopal and Rajeev Godara as well as match referee Youraj Singh.
A quick inspection was made to determine the quality of the surface after 24 wickets fell in less than four sessions, and the match officials then called both captains (Mandeep Singh of Punjab and Karn Sharma of Railways) to let them know the match would restart on December 22 on a different surface that was nearby to the one they played on.
However, this does not imply that the contest will last four days. The match will now only last two days, although teams are still free to modify their starting lineup because a new coin toss will be made.
“They could have fixed the field and picked up where they left off on the third day, but the match officials opted to play on a brand-new surface. We were in a great position, but because of this choice, we might lose out on the chance to win,” a Railways team official was reported by ESPNcricinfo as saying.
The match authorities concluded it was too uneven and erratic despite the wicket being green.
Railways scored 162 runs in their opening innings of play against Punjab. Opening batsmen Prabhsimran Singh (33) and Abhishek Sharma (36) got things going well, but the Railways spinners quickly devastated and defeated their opponent. Railways, however, was unable to profit from the circumstance.
Railways put 150 on board thanks to Yuvraj Singh (56), but they were still 12 runs behind Punjab. When the Mandeep Singh-led team lost four wickets for 18 runs in the second innings, the referee intervened and called off the game.
After the decision, railways—who could scent victory—were let down. A participant in the game afterwards reported that although the match official deemed the surface to be uneven, it had a green top.
The pitch was irregular. From the same place, some balls scooted low at shoe height while others struck the gloves. Although the wicket was green, the match authorities ruled that play could not proceed because it was too uneven and erratic.
