50 overs: The discussions and worries surrounding T20I standout Suryakumar Yadav’s performance have taken centre stage as India prepares for the series-deciding ODI in Chennai. Yadav has established his dominance in the shortest international format, but he is yet to make his bat speak in ODIs. Mumbai’s batter’s dismal 50-over streak was extended when, in Australia’s first two ODIs, he picked up two golden ducks off the hot Mitchell Starc.
Rahul Dravid, the head coach, hasn’t lost hope in the middle-order star despite Yadav’s poor ODI performance. Dravid thinks the 32-year-old is still adjusting to the ODI format and points out that the batter has played significantly less in the 50-over format than in the shortest international format. Interestingly, Yadav has played in only 22 ODIs compared to his 48 T20I matches while competing against the injured Shreyas Iyer at number four.
The middle-order batsman hasn’t participated in many ODI competitions with a lot of pressure at the domestic level, the head coach added (except Vijay Hazare Trophy). He has played T20 cricket frequently, including in the competitive IPL. A day after Rohit Sharma, the captain, said that potential players wouldn’t be denied longer ropes under him, Dravid has thrown his support behind the batter who is having trouble.
In opposition to ODIs, Suryakumar Yadav has played many T20 games under pressure.
“Not too worried about Surya. He received two excellent balls. Surya has a few qualities, one of which is studying the 50-over game. The T20 is a little unique. He has ten years of IPL T20 experience,” Dravid told reporters in Chennai.
“Surya has participated in a lot of T20 cricket. He has participated in many intense T20 matches. With the exception of the Vijay Hazare Trophy, there aren’t enough high-stakes competitions for ODIs at the local level, similar to the IPL for T20 cricket. Despite playing a lot of 20-over cricket, in my opinion, he hasn’t played as much one-day cricket. We need to be patient and give him some time. We definitely see the benefits of him succeeding,” Dravid said.
