Test Cricket: Ricky Ponting, a former captain of Australia, thinks the International Cricket Council (ICC) can help even up remuneration in Test matches. While addressing pay discrepancies, Ponting offered the example of West Indies players who favour domestic cricket over international commitments due to financial considerations.
At a gathering hosted by the ICC before to the World Test Championship (WTC) final between India and Australia at the Oval starting on June 7, Ponting was questioned about young people wanting to play the five-day game in an era of T20 leagues. He retorted that many nations had different perspectives on the matter.
The Australian said that it is getting harder to develop new West Indian cricketers who want to participate in Test matches. He continued by saying that the Caribbean’s payment structure is inferior to some of the franchise leagues.
“Various nations have various responses to that question. For example, in the Caribbean, it is getting harder and harder to develop young people who desire to play Test cricket,” according to Ponting.
Ponting stated, “Sri Lanka and Bangladesh will have the same payment systems as the Caribbean, and they don’t line up with some of the franchise leagues.”
The ICC should level out the compensation more for international Test cricket: Ponting
Ricky Ponting continued by stating that players were paid generously in nations like India, England, and Australia to participate in the game’s longest format. The 48-year-old encouraged the ICC to take action in order to entice players from other nations who want to represent their nation. He said that the majority of young people in both his nation and India choose to wear blue headgear.
“This is not the situation in Australia, England, or India. Most people aim to play in a Test match because you are paid much to represent your nation in cricket. The ICC has a part to play in this,” the former world champion emphasised.
The Australian superstar also requests that the top cricket organisation even out compensation for international Test matches. According to Ricky Ponting, this action will draw athletes from many nations who will be inspired to represent their nation. He also disclosed that he had previously spoken with the ICC about this issue and given them his advice.
“It is something that has been spoken about at a very high level at the ICC to help that, but in India, the feeling I get is that most of these youngsters aspire to wear the baggy blue cap, and the same in Australia,” Ponting said in his conclusion.
