AFC Bournemouth 4-1 Everton: The pressure on Everton boss Frank Lampard has risen following their 4-1 League Cup defeat to AFC Bournemouth. Some Premier League fans have already demanded the departure of the 44-year-old former Chelsea player, who has been critical of his team.
Everton was knocked out in the third round of England’s second cup tournament on Tuesday evening, following a poor run in the Premier League. Four of the last six games have ended in defeat for the Toffees, dropping them to fifteenth place. A win would have given Lampard some breathing room on Tuesday night, but the manager elected to start 11 other players. Against Bournemouth, the B-team was clearly outnumbered.
AFC Bournemouth 4-1 Everton: Lampard’s reaction
Lampard afterwards admitted that Everton’s performance was poor. “I made several changes, but our goal is to win every game.” The manager defended his decision to send in a completely different team. “I have to safeguard the players that play consistently, and we also had a few injured players. We’ll have a busy schedule after the World Cup. Players who have a few minutes to show off want to do so as well. Everton also compensates them for this. Then they must take their opportunity.”
However, Lampard admitted subsequently that this did not happen versus Bournemouth. “If you keep making blunders like that, the answer is simple: you won’t be playing much.” He is aware that the fans are dissatisfied with Everton’s performance. “The supporters have travelled a long distance to get here and have witnessed a horrible game, without a question. With all of this team’s expertise, they should have been able to win this game. That is absolutely evident, and the fans are aware of it as well. I don’t have to deceive them,” the Englishman concluded.
The Toffees will have a chance at revenge this weekend in the Premier League. When these teams will lock horns once again at the Vitality Stadium.
