Newcastle United have strengthened themselves with Everton’s Anthony Gordon. The attacker comes over from Everton and signs a multi-year contract, Newcastle announced.
The Magpies do not mention a transfer amount, but according to English media, a fixed transfer fee of 40 million pounds (converted 45.6 million euros) is involved in the switch. Furthermore, the amount can reach 45 million pounds (51.3 million euros) through bonuses. This makes Gordon after Alexander Isak (acquired from Real Sociedad for seventy million euros) the most expensive purchase ever from Newcastle, which has deep pockets due to investments from Saudi Arabia.
Gordon caused a stir at Everton in the run-up to the transfer by missing three consecutive training sessions. That way he forced a transfer. On Friday he was spotted again at the training complex, but according to English media he did not train. Everton insisted that Gordon ‘just’ trained.
The 21-year-old Gordon is a youth product of Everton and made his debut for The Toffees at the age of sixteen. Since then he has made 78 official appearances for Everton, scoring seven goals and providing eight assists. Gordon was used in all positions at the forefront this season.
Gordon is happy with his transfer, he says on the digital home of his new employer. “Newcastle was always the club for me, I was convinced of that when I first heard it. It feels like it’s a really big step. People haven’t seen all that I can yet. Under this trainer I think I can really excel here,” he said.
Lampard’s parting speech
The Englishman’s contract at Everton ran until the summer of 2025. Last summer Chelsea were also interested in Gordon.
In Anthony Gordon, Everton had a midfielder who has long been overlooked because he was physically unable to keep up. After a training camp in his own home, everything changed.
Gordon saw his trainer Frank Lampard sacked at Everton earlier this week. Despite his dismissal, Lampard has no grudge against his former employer. “It really is a special club with a wonderful soul and an incredible history. I will always be proud of the incredible work and support from everyone involved in keeping the team in the Premier League last season. I wish Everton all the best in the future,” he said.
