An overjoyed Antony reacted on Monday to winning his first trophy in the Manchester United shirt. The Brazilian won the League Cup with his team at Wembley on Sunday. He is very grateful to trainer Erik ten Hag, with whom he celebrated a dancing party.
“I am very happy to have already won my first title in my first season at the club,” Antony said on Manchester United’s official club channels. The wing attacker, taken over from Ajax in the summer, quickly saw this season that things were going in the right direction at Old Trafford. “Since the beginning I was sure that this group would take United back to where it should be,” added Antony Matheus dos Santos.
Antony knew that The Red Devils’ reputation had taken a hit, but was eager to be part of the team that made Manchester United a proud top club again. “People need to respect this great club again. It is the first trophy of many to come. This group is great. We are determined and united,” the former Ajax winger remarked.
An overjoyed Antony owes it all to his manager Erik ten Hag
“If you have a good atmosphere between players and staff, you can’t go wrong,” thinks Antony. “People are demanding in Manchester, the attacker knows. And I’m not one to be happy with little. I want to win prizes. And there are many other players who think the same way. This mentality spreads throughout the group. All noses are pointing in the same direction.”
Ten Hag is crucial to Antony’s success. The coach took him from Amsterdam to England and made United a feared club again. The Brazilian praised, “Erik is essential to the success. His energy, the confidence he exudes, his intelligence and tactical strategy are all incredible.”
“Everything he tells us before the game comes out on the pitch,” explains Antony. Together, the duo enjoyed their first milestone at Wembley for a while at their new employer. “It’s my third trophy with him, so we hugged. He told me there were more prizes to come. We share the same mentality,” the 23-year-old concluded.
