Thomas Tuchel has caused astonishment in Germany with his reaction to Bayern Munich’s landmark defeat to Manchester City in the quarter-final of the Champions League. The German trainer was remarkably positive.
Tuchel: “We were punished hard, that goal came out of nowhere”
Bayern Munich lost 3-0 to City on Tuesday evening. Tuchel did not think that the result reflected the ratios very well. “We were punished when we were the better team. In the second half we were even better than the first half. It was only a matter of time before we scored, the momentum was completely with us. And then we gave away the second goal,” Tuchel told Amazon Prime.
A mistake by Dayot Upamecano led to City’s 2-0 after the break. Tuchel thought that was also City’s merit. “At this level you sometimes get stuck,” thought Tuchel. “We were punished hard, that goal came out of nowhere. He knows himself that it was a mistake and it will not be the last of his career. It’s sour that it’s happening on this stage today. We’re footing the bill for that, but I refuse to call this a bad performance.”
Tuchel remarkably positive: “Today I fell in love with this team”
Tuchel was very satisfied with his team until that fatal moment in the seventieth minute. “There was definitely more in it and we also earned more. I told them the same as I’m saying here now, that I refuse to hang everything on the result. We deserved at least a goal and conceded one or two too many. That’s a pity,” Julian Nagelsmann’s successor at Bayern Munich remained positive.
For Tuchel there is therefore not a man over board yet. He is very satisfied with his first fifteen days as coach of Bayern Munich. He concluded, “Today I fell in love with this team. It was fun being a coach today. We have defended ourselves, have become more robust. At half-time we said that we wanted to get even better in the one-on-one duels, which I thought was very good. Even if it sounds strange, but today I really enjoyed myself.”
