The Italian media are shocked by AC Milan’s performance. Stefano Pioli’s team lost 2-0 to fellow townsman Internazionale in the semi-finals of the Champions League and now needs ‘a miracle’.
Italian media shocked by AC Milan: “Inter dominated in all aspects”
Internazionale have gained the upper hand over Milan for the decider on Wednesday. The team won the first leg of the UEFA Champions League Semi-finals 2-0 in the away leg. And the second leg will be played on Tuesday, May 16.
Internazionale took the lead early in the game. When Edin Dzeko scored after 8 minutes, on a pass from Hakan Çalhanoglu. Internazionale increased their lead to 2-0 early in the game when Henrikh Mkhitaryan scored, with an assist from Federico Dimarco, in the 11th minute. The second half was goalless, so the game ended with a 2-0 win for Internazionale
La Gazzetta dello Sport saw that AC Milan was completely outclassed by Inter, which led 2-0 after just over ten minutes. “The goals of Edin Dzeko and Henrikh Mkhitaryan were made possible in part by the individual amnesia of the Rossoneri players. But it was a good reflection of the first half, in which Inter dominated in all aspects: intensity, technique, movement and physical condition,” wrote La Gazzetta. “Two goals in the space of three minutes was a punch to the stomach that left us breathless throughout the first half.”
La Repubblicca also saw the ‘deadly start’ of AC Milan, but also saw this coming. They wrote, “You can’t lie to the Champions League. In recent weeks, the league and Italian Super Cup have already told the truth.” Inter beat the city rivals 3-0 in the Super Cup and also defeated AC Milan in the competition (1-0).
Inter already has one foot in Istanbul
Corriere dello Sport mainly focused on the performance of Inter coach Simone Inzaghi. He was compared to former Italian success coach Arrigo Sacchi. Sacchi also had the remarkable ability to prepare decisive matches better than others. They wrote, “It is no coincidence that he is more successful in the cup tournaments than in the competition.”
Tuttosport spoke of a ‘devastating start’ and a ‘masterpiece’ from Dzeko on the first goal. “Inter already has one foot in Istanbul (where the final is played). A comeback for Pioli is really complicated. Inzaghi confirms the “Cup skills” and AC Milan now needs a miracle,” they wrote.
