Bayern Munich 1-2 Freiburg: It was a massive upset last night at the Allianz Arena. Not Bayern Munich, but SC Freiburg is second in the semifinals after Eintracht Frankfurt. Die Schwaben won 1-2 through a utilized penalty from Lucas Höler deep in stoppage time. A first tap for Thomas Tuchel, a great night for Mark Fleks.
Freiburg creates a cup sensation deep in injury time and eliminates Bayern
After more than fifteen minutes Leroy Sané had a good chance, but Matthias Ginter was able to prevent a goal with everything he had, at the expense of a corner kick. Joshua Kimmich brought it nicely in front of the goal and Dayot Upamecano climbed above everyone so that he could hit the target. Flecks had no chance. Freiburg bit off. Maximilian Eggestein and Michael Gregoritsch already had good chances, until it became 1-1 after 27 minutes.
Nicolas Hofler proudly signed that equalizer. A delightful dropkick in the far corner: three Yann Sommers could not have done anything there either. Remarkable: it was only Hofler’s first goal on German soil this season. Bayern was a bit impressed and didn’t really get into its rhythm anymore. The team was lucky that Höler did not expect a cross, otherwise it might have been 1-2 at halftime. In the closing seconds of the first half, Flek had to make a save, but the Limburger did it properly: 1-1 at half time..
Second half
Even after the break, the, as always, sold-out Allianz Arena saw a downright fun game with pinpricks on both sides. The only thing that Bayern really did better than Freiburg: set pieces. Kimmich’s gifted right foot painted another set piece in the danger zone around Fleks, Benjamin Pavard extended the ball to the crossbar. The forces at Freiburg flowed away, in the final phase Bayern handed out the sheets. But did it rain opportunities? Not really.
Just when Freiburg seemed to have done enough to reach extra time, the golden opportunity for the complete stunt followed: a handball from Jamal Musiala was punished with a penalty kick. Höler put himself behind the ball and scored convincingly. With that, Christian Streich’s team awaits the semi-finals.
