Sheraldo Becker, Danilho Doekhi and the other Union Berlin players can focus on the Bundesliga. In the DFB-Pokal, Eintracht Frankfurt was 2-0 too strong, so the title holder of the Europa League is the first team in the semi-finals. The difference was made within minutes.
Two assists from Götze in two minutes help Frankfurt to the semi-finals
A heel from Mario Götze set Randal Kolo Muani free for the keeper after ten minutes, the striker finished in a controlled manner with his left leg. No sooner had he cheered than he had another reason to celebrate. Again Götze was the declarant, Kolo Muani was faster than opponent Robin Knoche and saw that Union goalkeeper Lennart Grill was way too far in front of his goal. The Frenchman could easily take care of 2-0.
Already after twenty minutes the game seemed decided by a goal from Rafael Borré, but the Colombian was just offside and the VAR rightly put a line through the goal. Union was actually not involved and was lucky that Borré shot the crossbar moments later and Sebastian Rode shot the rebound wide. The visitors from Berlin simply had nothing to say in the first half.
Second half
After the break, Urs Fischer’s team was able to neutralize the home team, but no more than that. So it wasn’t a very interesting second half. Frankfurt easily held on, leaning on the big lead that the Götze – Kolo Muani tandem had delivered within a few minutes. Jamie Leweling had a good chance at 2-1, but Kevin Trapp saved.
That was it. Frankfurt can therefore still hope for the overall victory in the cup, as they also succeeded in 2019. Union still has eight games to play in the Bundesliga. If Die Eisernen’s performance remains consistent, qualifying for the Champions League looks set to be the stunning end result.
Furthermore, in a more optimistic yet realistic aspect, the club could challenge for the league title. As they currently, sit in the 3rd position, just four points behind Bayern Munich (who also suffered elimination last night)
