The away game for Cádiz against Real Betis has given a new low point for the hosts when it comes to discipline. After red for Sergio Canales and Aitor Ruibal, the counter is already at twelve red cards this season in La Liga. That shockingly high number is not isolated in the Spanish league.
It’s raining red cards in Spain: clubs are sounding the alarm
Subtopper Betis not only suffered a surprising defeat at home against Cádiz, the team of trainer Manuel Pellegrini ended the game with nine men. Canales had already been sent off with a direct red card in the 38th minute and Ruibal had to leave in the sixtieth minute. No team in La Liga has received as many red cards as Betis this season.
City fellow Sevilla, however, comes close with eleven red cards. Two players were also sent off at Los Nervionenses this round, much to the club’s frustration. Sevilla published a statement the day after the 2-2 draw against Celta de Vigo. “The numbers are telling. We are number fourteen in La Liga in terms of offenses committed, but we are now top in red cards and second in yellow cards. The averages in Spain should be a wake-up call. La Liga is by far the top league with the most cards. More rounds have been played in the Premier League, but 29 red cards have been handed out this season. In La Liga there are already 108,” said the Sevilla leadership.
Espanyol made a similar statement on Saturday after a red card for Aleix Vidal in the home game against Athletic de Bilbao, which was already the ninth red card for the Barcelona club.
Premier League vs La Liga
By way of comparison: in the Premier League, Wolverhampton Wanderers have the most red cards with six sending offs. While Chelsea, Crystal Palace and Tottenham players have been sent off three times.
In La Liga, just before the end of the 28th round, there are only five teams with less than four red cards.
