The third qualifying round of Champions League came to a close today, with clear winners emerging from its second leg.
Red Star Belgrade, Rangers, and Slavia Prague faced elimination in the Champions League third qualifying round on Tuesday, today. These defeats ended their respective unbeaten domestic seasons.
Also, both the Czech Republic and Scotland have seen all their teams (clubs) suffer elimination before the upcoming playoff round.
Now, the next stage – the two-legged playoff round – in the Champions League will begin from August 18 onward. It will take place over the next two midweeks.
Then, the draw for the 32-team group stage will take place on August 26 in Istanbul.

Red Star lost on a 2-1 aggregate, across both legs, after losing the second leg 1-0 to Sheriff in Moldova.
The 1991 European champions have thus missed the opportunity to face their long-time rivals Dinamo Zagreb in the playoff round.
On the other hand, Dinamo defeated Legia Warsaw 1-0 to advance on a 2-1 aggregate.
Malmö defeated Rangers at their own home by 1-2. This follows an exactly similar 2-1 victory for Malmö in Sweden in the first leg last week, as well. So, they qualify through on a 2-4 aggregate.
Meanwhile, Slavia’s 1-0 home win over Ferencváros did not allow them to overcome a two-goal deficit from the first leg.
After falling behind early against Cluj, United States forward Jordan Siebatcheu scored twice in the first half for Young Boys. He carried Switzerland’s Young Boys to a 3-1 win and 4-2 aggregate victory over Cluj.
Former European champions Benfica and PSV Eindhoven will meet in the playoffs in a rematch of 1988 final. After all, they both won 4-0 on aggregate in the third round, against Spartak Moscow and Midtjylland respectively.
Ludogorets Razgrad, Bulgaria’s champion, defeated Olympiakos in a penalty shootout. The penalties decided a tie in which both the teams drew 3-3 on aggregate.
Ludogorets experienced a 2-2 second-leg draw against Olympiakos, and last season, the latter team would’ve advanced ahead on this result.
This season, however, saw the removal of the away-goals rule, and Ludogorets benefited from this change in protocol.
Shakhtar Donetsk defeated Genk 2-1 in each leg to earn a playoff against Monaco, the 2004 Champions League runner-up.
Finally, Monaco defeated Sparta Prague 3-1 at home on Tuesday, winning the third qualifying round 5-1 on aggregate.
