Ex-PSV player Georginio Wijnaldum would want to return to the Dutch fields at Feyenoord if the opportunity arose. That club holds a particular place in the 32-year-old midfielder’s heart.
Wijnaldum made his Feyenoord debut at the age of sixteen and went on to play in the first team for four years before making the risky move to PSV in the summer of 2011. In Eindhoven, he developed into an international and was signed by Newcastle United. Wijnaldum then developed into an international top player with Liverpool, where he stayed until last year.
Wijnaldum joined PSG on a free transfer and has been loaned to AS Roma this season, who have an option to acquire the currently injured Rotterdammer. Returning to the Netherlands does not appear to be an option for the time being, but Wijnaldum has a strong inclination. In an interview with ESPN analyst Kenneth Perez, he stated that he would prefer a return to Feyenoord over a return to PSV.
Ex-PSV player Georginio Wijnaldum: “I was a Feyenoord fan since I was a child”
“It’s always difficult to tell which club you’re going to, but Feyenoord is just my club,” Wijnaldum explains his decision. As a Sparta youth player, he chose to transfer to Rotterdam’s major neighbour in 2004 at the age of thirteen. “I could play for Ajax or Feyenoord. Sparta would have preferred that I join Ajax, but I was a Feyenoord fan since I was a child. So the decision was simple for me.”
PSV is also close to his heart. “It has grown a lot in those years. I went to PSV despite not knowing or liking the club. I only had it for Feyenoord and Sparta because I used to play for them. I’ve had some fantastic times in the last four years. Footballer of the Year, but also how the club treated me. In four years, I’ve grown to adore that club. Only Feyenoord has my heart, and PSV came after.”
