Georginio Wijnaldum’s Eredivisie return is far from a foregone conclusion. The 32-year-old Oranje-international announced this after the loss of the Dutch national team against Italy (2-3).
Wijnaldum: “Returning to the Netherlands not my first option”
Wijnaldum came in in Enschede on Sunday and scored the second goal for the Orange. Afterwards, the midfielder, loaned by Paris Saint-Germain to AS Roma, addressed questions about his future. After all, PSV would like to bring him back to the Netherlands and his former employer Feyenoord is also mentioned as a possible destination.
“I’ve been reading all kinds of things about PSV and Feyenoord in recent days, but that’s not the issue now,” said Wijnaldum, who also didn’t want to completely rule out a return. “I will keep all options open this summer, but a return is not my first option. I don’t know if clubs have reported, then you have to be with my agent. We now have time to sort everything out.”
Wijnaldum still has a contract with PSG until mid-2024. The first training session is scheduled for July 17 in Paris.
Ajax strengthens selection with midfielder from AS Roma
Speaking about AS Roma’s midfielders, Ajax has strengthened the selection with Benjamin Tahirovic. The midfielder comes over from AS Roma and is quickly medically examined in Amsterdam. Then he signs a multi-year contract.
Tahirovic is a twenty-year-old midfielder from Sweden who plays his international matches for Bosnia and still had a contract with Roma until the summer of 2026. He made the switch from Vasalunds IF to Roma in the summer of 2021 and joined the U21 team there. Tahirovic made his debut in Serie A this season. He played eleven games.
“Benjamin is a strong and ball-resistant midfielder. He is a great talent with a great mentality. In a few days he will come to Amsterdam for the medical examination and to finalize the contractual matters with us,” says director of football affairs Sven Mislintat via the Ajax channels.
Tahirovic is the second summer reinforcement of Ajax, which previously signed Branco van den Boomen on a free transfer. It is expected that the selection of trainer Maurice Steijn will be further strengthened later this summer.
