Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink hopes that in the search for the successor to sacked Potter, Chelsea will end up with someone who offers more opportunities to the youth. The former striker of The Blues sees two big names drop out for that reason.
Hasselbaink tips Chelsea for succession Potter: four trainers on shortlist
Potter was sacked on Sunday evening after 207 days at Chelsea and English media are already speculating about the Englishman’s succession. Chelsea paid around 24 million euros to Brighton & Hove Albion in September last year to release Potter as a replacement for Thomas Tuchel.
The Daily Telegraph writes that Chelsea club management has four candidates in mind to succeed Potter. Potter’s former right-hand man Bruno Saltor is currently doing the honors at Stamford Bridge. According to the newspaper, Julian Nagelsmann, Luciano Spalletti, Luis Enrique and Mauricio Pochettino are on a shortlist from Chelsea owner Todd Boehly, who would see Nagelsmann as the most suitable candidate.
Hasselbaink, who was under contract with Chelsea between 2000 and 2004, understands that his former employer ended up with Nagelsmann, among others. “Nagelsmann is clearly a very good option. He knows what winning is and has the experience of working at a very big club,” Hasselbaink told Sky Sports.
“The choice of a new manager will be very important for Chelsea. They now have to act smart: it has to be someone who can make players better and who is going to give young players a chance. Therefore, you cannot now arrive with someone like Diego Simeone or go back to Jose Mourinho,” said Hasselbaink, who was recently appointed assistant coach of the England national team.
Wijnaldum disappoints teammate with opening goal for Roma
Speaking of Jose, Ola Solbakken fell victim to the fickle nature of football on Sunday at Stadio Olimpico. The Norwegian midfielder was ready to come in for AS Roma, coach José Mourinho just gave him the final instructions.
Georginio Wijnaldum threw a spanner in the works. Just at that moment, the Dutchman beautifully headed the 1-0 against Sampdoria against the nets. That changed things: Defending a lead requires a completely different game plan than chasing a lead. Mourinho looked apologetically at Solbakken, who had to sit down anyway.
Finally he got his substitute, ten minutes before the end. In that short time Solbakken also made a name for himself. Because deep in injury time he was the man of the assist for Stephan El Shaarawy’s third Roma goal. Still, the ‘almost switch’ remains the most striking moment. Mourinho shared the images on his Instagram account, apparently he also liked it.
