Football Updates: In the midst of escalating tensions between his native nation and Russia, Manchester City defender Oleksandr Zinchenko expressed his support for Ukraine.
In an impassioned Instagram post, the defender expressed his thoughts on the current situation as Russian President Vladimir Putin gathered tens of thousands of troops on Ukraine’s borders and recognised the independence of pro-Russian separatists in the Donetsk and Lugansk areas.
In the article, Zinchenko, who began his career with FC Ufa in Russia, declared that he cannot “stand by” while “the entire civilised world is concerned about my nation.”

His post read: “The whole civilized world is worried about the situation in my country.”
“I can’t stay back and strive to put my point across. In the photo – my country. The country where I was born and raised.”
“A country whose colours I defend in the international sports arena. A country that we try to glorify and develop. A country whose borders must remain inviolable. My country belongs to Ukrainians and no one will ever be able to appropriate it. We will not give up! Glory to Ukraine.”
Zinchenko, 25, has 115 games for Manchester City and has three Premier League crowns, four League Cups, and one FA Cup to his name. In 2019, he was also named Ukrainian Footballer of the Year.
Meanwhile, Manchester City will seek to bounce back against Merseyside club Everton at Goodison Park on Saturday after suffering a harsh defeat against Tottenham Hotspur.
